“Land of the Dead is one of the most original and gripping zombie novels I have ever read, offering a glimpse into the life of a zombie in a world turned backwards, where zombies live and humans are feared. Highly recommended!” —Jeremy Robinson, bestselling author of Apocalypse Machine

“Land of the Dead is simply brilliant, and its telling a superb achievement. Robert Swartwood has given us a wonderful twist, not only on the zombie novel, but on the dystopian tale as well. It's like Brave New World meets Logan's Run, but with a bite all its own. Strongly recommended!” —Joe McKinney, author of Dead City

Land of the Dead eBook Robert Swartwood

Finally after reading book after book, of zombies killing and dragging their rotting carcasses across the world and leaving it in ruin. This author took the hint and changed how we see zombies forever. This book kept me up reading all night and into the next day. I refused to be interrupted as I devoured this refreshing zombie thriller. Mind you, this book will require you to tap into your imagination a bit, but its worth, because who wants to read a book where you already know how to picture everything. With most Z stories you don't have to use you imagination much, because what the heck everyone knows what it looks like to be in a overrun zombie world. This book takes your preconceived notions, throws them in the trash and awakens a burst of life. I wish I would have seen this book in my recommended reading sooner. It would have saved me from reading many unfortunate, somewhat identical zombie tales. Two thumbs up to this author for using his noggin and creating a whole new world. I would love, to see a continuation of this story. Truth be told I didn't want it to end and I was sad when it did!

Land of the Dead eBook Robert Swartwood Reviews

The author has created a mirror world in which the Dead won The Zombie Wars and control the world. Humans are now called Zombies and are hunted and killed. At age ten all of the animated dead face a choice of staying dead or becoming a Zombie. Those who chose to not be animated must be handed over to be killed. Our protagonist Conrad, son of the greatest zombie killer of all time has reached that choice with his son. Or rather his son has reached his choice. This is where the story bogs down somewhat with the agent of change. All in all though a very good book.
I enjoyed the book immensely. My main genre is z books. The twist of the zombies is quite good. I wish would have put this under my recommendations sooner, as that is where I buy most of my books. So, finally I came across this gem. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who reads this genre. I could summarize the plot for you, but I won't give away spoilers, but enjoyed the author's writing style and hope he will entertain writing another z book. Don't let this one slip under your radar like it did me.
The author had a clever role-reversal idea, but went no where with it.The story kept reminding me of Bizarro World in the old Superman comic books, where everything is the opposite of what it should be, but just not as cleverly done.. It would have made an interesting 30-minute episode of "The Twilight Zone," but that's about it. If you like some science in your science fiction, this most definitely is not a book for you. Dead people rule the planet. End of story. Don't expect any explanations of the illogical -- including zombie dogs, zombie insects, even zombie tropical fish. It was impossible to have any empathy for the main characters. The story supposedly is set thousands of years in the future, yet the inhabitants of the planet are driving SUVs, smoking cigarettes, firing guns, playing video games. And -- being dead -- they are supposed to be devoid of feelings, but feelings -- hate, jealousy, fear, love -- drive their decisions. The book does not even work as a commentary on dehumanizing 21st century life, which would have been a worthy goal to achieve.
In a world where the dead are animated and the living are known as zombies, Conrad lives with his pregnant wife and young son. He is a Hunter, working for a government that mandates all children play a minimum number of hours of violent video games each day, at a job which calls for him to find and exterminate the living zombies. His son is nearing the dangerous age of ten, a time when the dreaded Pandora sings a siren's song, tempting children to dig them up his or her own and become one of the living through its power. Conrad has some experience with Pandoras, having looked for his when he was a child, stopped by his father, the greatest Hunter of all time. When Conrad hesitates one night to kill a zombie, he's swept up in in a political and social struggle, pitting the dead against the living and their dead sympathizers, one which centers around his biggest Hunter rival, Phillip.

The book also includes two short stories based in the Land of the Dead. One chronicles the story of a child who finds and digs up his Pandora; the other fills in the backstory of Phillip.

The book is a refreshing take on the typical zombie story. I've not read anything that shows the flip side - the dead having families, jobs, social interaction, even celebrating "animation days" with cake, balloons and presents. It was fascinating to watch Conrad's internal growth, as he came closer and closer to accepting zombies and their right to exist. A very original concept, executed with a tight plot and sympathetic, believable characters.
I loved this book, wish there was more to read! I have to admit, at first the book was odd, barely made any sense, & very nearly irritated me at times- but after careful consideration, I believe this has more to due with its unique Zombie perspective.

Once you get used to Conrad's disposition, you find a compelling story with thought provoking ideas regarding emotion, perception, imagination, & existence in all forms. I would highly suggest this book to anyone looking for something unique, compelling, & thrilling- an all around good read!

I feel I must say once more though... I WISH THERE WERE MORE!!!! Haha
This book is very different from the usual story of the dead. These dead live in cities, enjoy families, worry about their jobs and maybe even who's going to fix supper. However, their world is ruled by their underlying fear of the living. As the dead make plans to solve their dilemma once and for all we find traitors abound, fear reigns and suddenly our hero, Conrad, must acknowledge his world was not his choice & he'll not limit his son to the same existence. He's torn by his wife's lack of faith & understanding. In spite of all that slows his effort to do what is right he struggles on. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Hope you enjoy .

This author took the hint and changed how we see zombies forever. This book kept me up reading all night and into the next day.
